History

Littleton Bicycle Shoppe was started by Barry Field in 1981. Barry was an avid cyclist and saw a need for a decent shop in our area. He opened the shop in April 1981 and started club road rides immediately. Always involved in the community by organizing rides and races and helping to coach hockey. He quickly became a Main Street icon.

In 1992, I was a chef by trade and was starting to get a bit burned out. I had gotten into riding and some racing and had built some bikes part time at a local ski shop that also sold bikes.  I stopped in to Barry’s shop, applied for a job part time and never left. Barry taught me all the bike mechanics he learned over the years and promptly made me full time. I eventually worked my way up to his manager and handled about everything for him.

In May of 2003 Barry was killed in a motorcycle accident so I ran the shop for the rest of the year. The crew really pulled together and helped his widow Sally and their family through the horrible time. In March of 2004 I bought the business and changed the name to Littleton Bike & Fitness to emphasize the amount of fitness sales we were doing. In 2006 I bought our current location on Cottage Street. It was originally a Ford garage. The word is that Henry Ford came up on the train in 1910 or so and sold Herbert Downing the Ford franchise for Littleton, NH. It remained a Ford garage until the mid 70’s and then became North East Glass, a custom window manufacturer and installer. We extensively renovated the building and brought back a lot of the original look as much as possible.  A few years ago we moved into the lower part of the building, a bit smaller space. We spent the time to fix it up nicely and we hope you enjoy the vintage feel of the new shop. Our new address is 30 Cottage St. Suite 2, Littleton NH 03561

I never really knew what I wanted to be when I grew up so when Barry passed away, that made my mind up for me. I had to take his legacy and carry it forward. There is always part of Barry in the shop and that is how I like it, but he wasn’t perfect either so I try to utilize his strengths and fix the weaknesses. Almost twenty years after my first day and I still enjoy going to work each day.

We carry bikes for two year olds and bikes for high end cyclists, Hotwalks to S-Works. We mostly deal with bikes from Specialized, but also do full custom from Seven, or Co-Motion. Not much pure downhill or triathlon (tried it but it didn’t work). In the past few years Electric Assist Bikes have skyrocketed in popularity. We think they are great, especially in this hilly region we live.  We have found our e-assist customers ride more often and don’t worry about the hills anymore. Our store is clean and not cluttered , not crammed. We typically stock about 40 different models and maintain a rental fleet of gravel bikes, MTB bikes and comfort bikes, plus Electric assist bikes. We are also a Specialized FSR test center and have top quality models from Specialized for both men and women to demo. It is free standing with plenty of parking and with our new space easy entrance from the parking lot out back. Our shop is also right on the Ammonoosuc River in the heart of downtown. There is a new path called the Riverwalk which goes right through the property and feeds into the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail. The Ammonoosuc Rail Trail a 19 mile long rail trail in Littleton and folks are welcome to use our parking lot as a trail head.

Our goal is to be everyone’s favorite bike and fitness shop, not necessarily the cheapest but the best! The one that they would send their friends to because they know they will get treated well and get a great value.
